Dec 29, 2017 - Farm Update Open Sat 12/30 and...

Remember a few months ago when the fall weather was so warm and beautiful? Many times we shared the sentiment, "We'll pay for this later." Well, we are paying for it later, averages being what they are! We told you that we would be open during the winter but never expected it to start like this!

The extremely cold temperatures have caused us to be closed for a few days while conditions were dangerous. We will be open Saturday, Dec 30 from 11 - 5, for our regular hours.

We're keeping an eye on the forecast for Sunday which at present seems clear but very cold.

Start 2018 off in a healthy way by getting a supply of crispy apples for snacking. We have Honeycrisp, Fuji, Shizuka, Braeburn, Granny Smith, Cameo, Rome, Macintosh, Cortland, Royal Empire, Baldwin and Winesap. Our Assorted Thirds make wonderful applesauce, a tried and true comfort food for this season.

Cider is sold out but we will be making several more presses during January (dates yet to be determined).

Just a thought....Our Mini crisps are a real treat to have in your freezer for warming up your attitude during these cold winter days!

Your encouragement, word of mouth recommendations and willingness to come to the farm in all types of weather are just a few of the reasons we are grateful.

Dec 12, 2017 - Farm Update Apple Astonishment

It has been a lot of fun, the last few weeks, watching the astonishment on people's faces when they walk into the salesroom and see the large selection of apple varieties available. They are pleasantly surprised that this year's crop was so big, much of it is still available during the Holiday season. (And will likely have a good supply well into the new year!)

We have 13 varieties still available: Honeycrisp, Fuji, Shizuka, Braeburn, Granny Smith, Cameo, Rome, Macintosh, Cortland and Royal Empire. HEIRLOOM apples available now: Baldwin, Winesap, and Northern Spy (last box).
It's getting close to the time for holiday parties, family gatherings and out-of-town get-togethers. Are you planning to order frozen unbaked apple pies or frozen unbaked apple crisps for your holiday entertaining?

The deadline for ordering pies and crisps in time for Christmas is Sunday, Dec. 17 at 5 PM. You can use our online order form or send an email to us applebrookfarm@cox.net. Phone orders are OK too at 860 654 1590 (texts don't work at that number). We will have some items for sale on a first come basis; however to avoid disappointment it's a good idea to order ahead.

It helps a great deal to plan our cider pressing schedule if people order ahead. You don't have to, but we would appreciate it if you could(online form has a cider section, you could email or just tell us the next time you come to get cider).

Merrily,
Tom and Sharon Muska, Growers and Cider Pressers

Nov 30, 2017 - Farm Update YES

This is our annual YES message......Someone stopped by yesterday to visit and was shocked to find out that we are still open for sales Th and Fri 11 - 6, Sat and Sun 11 - 5.

There seems to be confusion between this year and last year. In 2016 we did close early due to a small crop. That is not the case in 2017!!!

So here goes with the answer to each question being YES:

Do you still have your beautiful, crisp Honeycrisp apples for sale?

Will you be open through December and January?

Do you have 14 varieties of apples stored in your cold storage rooms at an average temp of 35 degrees or less?

Are they Honeycrisp, Macoun, Fuji, Braeburn, Granny Smith, Shizuka, Cameo, Macintosh, Cortland, Royal Empire, Baldwin, Winesap, Northern Spy and Yellow Newton?

Will you be pressing Grampa Tony's unpasteurized cider through January?

Do you still have frozen unbaked pies and crisps made with your apples? To avoid disappointment should we order these items using your online order form or sending an email to applebrookfarm@cox.net or calling 860 654 1590?

Hope to see you at the farm soon,

Nov 23, 2017 - Farm Update Happy Thanksgiving!

Just a note to thank you for supporting our farm in so many ways. We appreciate very much your coming to buy our apples and the items that are made from them. More than that, we are sustained by your encouraging words and your sympathetic interest in the ups and downs of farming.

This year we will be able to be open for sales into the winter. Our cold storage rooms provide places where apples can be kept crisp and fresh during the coming months. We will continue to press Grampa Tony's unpasteurized cider, have pies and crisps made from our apples and, or course, continue to have cider donuts for a treat.

Hope to see you at the farm soon,

Applebrook Farm, 216 East Road, Broad Brook.

Nov 15, 2017 - Farm Update Looking forward

We received an email which ended with "Looking forward to Thanksgiving with Grampa Tony's cider." If you are planning to do the same, it would help us a great deal if you could order cider ahead of time. We need to know how much cider is wanted and when to press it. You don't have to order, however it really is a good idea. A quick email with what you want and when you want to pick it up is fine. Gallons are $11 and Half gallons are $6.

We will be open Thanksgiving week on Mon, Tues and Wed from 11 - 6..... Not open Thanksgiving Day or Friday, Nov. 24......Reopening for regular sales hours Sat Nov 25.....

The warm weather is persisting into what should be a cooler time of the year...so what is happening at the farm?  Harvesting is proceeding normally.  As usual after harvesting our apples, we tuck them into our cold storage rooms for safe keeping.  We store our apples at optimal low temperatures to insure the best quality.  When you take them home, please store them in your refrigerator to keep them fresh.

Apple varieties available now are Honeycrisp, Macoun, Gala, Redcort, Macintosh, Golden Supreme,  Jonamac, Summer Rambeau and Greening.  More varieties will be coming soon so please check our farm phone line 860 654 1590 or our Facebook page for updated info.

Sep 07, 2017 - Farm Update Opening Day 9/9/17

We are very happy to be able to tell you that we are opening for the season this coming Saturday. Hours for Sales are Sat and Sun. 11 - 5..... Th and Fri 11 - 6.
After last year's tiny crop we have been blessed with a beautiful crop for this year. Very often the trees will respond with a profusion of blossoms following a skimpy season. This is exactly what happened this spring!
Pollination weather was very good, resulting in a tremendous amount of little apples. Of course, we couldn't let that type of crop continue to grow... so in early June we began snipping off the smallest apples by hand, continuing throughout the summer on a daily basis. Plentiful rain, in sharp contrast to last year's drought, created conditions enabling the trees to produce an outstanding crop.

Opening Day we will have these varieties for sale: Honeycrisp, Macintosh, Gravenstein, Summer Rambeau, Greening, Jonamac. More varieties will be ripening soon. We have put a list of our apples in approximate ripening order on our website www.applebrookfarm.com. Don't hold us to that timetable as apples ripen at their own pace, not ours!
Cider donuts
are available freshly made on Saturdays and Sundays and sold frozen on Thursdays and Fridays.

Our beekeeper brought some spring honey from hives which are located here on the farm. She said because of the many fall wildflowers blooming here, the bees should be able to make a lot more honey in the coming months.
(Just a note: Last year due to the drought, we didn't have any fall honey at all!).

We'll start pressing Grampa Tony's unpasteurized cider in October when we have the right mix of apple varieties.
Frozen unbaked pies and crisps will be made later in September.

Hope to see you at the farm soon,
